In church, I was taught that prayer was something that we "do" as a duty. To be loyal, devoted, dedicated, praying is what good people do.
The Sweat and Fasting Lodges have taught me that prayer is conversation with the One who created all beings, all things. Prayer is a conversation where the Light shines into the dark corners of the mind. The quality of Light has the ability to reconfigure distortion. In seeing one's faults revealed by the Light, there is no weight for wrongdoing. Rather than living from guilt and shame, the warmth of the light grows a seed of desire to live with the new knowledge, a desire to do good, to be goodness.
