Somatic Experiencing® Intermediate Level III training examines torture and defines it:

"This category includes situations in which a person must confront the experience that humans may actively intend each other harm, and will act on those intentions."

I've come to understand through trauma training and personal experience that torture, if not identified, defined, brought into awareness, then shame from the experience or the multiple experiences distorts everything.

But when someone brings new information to you with gentleness and compassion, then there is the opportunity to stop and face it all.  To see the innocent self that you've protected instinctively. To understand, to forgive, to come out of the grip of shame and to find your sacred self again.
