Here, this sacred text reads that the greater harm is our ill-inflicted mind toward oneself.

Meditation, purification, prayer, medicine, bathing, fasting
it is all to quieten the ill-inflicted mind.  Transformation comes with practice and then sometimes it is a miracle.  Most of the time change comes through practice.
